In the U.S., transgender youth are the more likely to suffer from feeling excluded and in turn experience “mental health woes” according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics.
Researchers said the constant feeling of pressure from family and friends leads to stress on youth who identify as transgender or non-conforming.
Additionally, these youth have the highest rates of suicide and the rates of mental health conditions in transgender youth were found to be 13 times higher than those whose gender is in line with their identity.
This population of children in the U.S. is also the most likely to experience abuse and domestic violence. Researchers say it’s important to create more welcoming environments for this population of youth to feel safe and to understand that there are others in the same position as them.
