How should foundations across the U.S. best help to lead recovery efforts in Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria?
The Ford Foundation announced its efforts to help Puerto Rico on the road to recovery after Hurricane Maria killed hundreds, by providing funding and giving control of relief projects to local organizations.
However the foundation’s moves have raised questions about whether granting control to local foundations will actually lead to fair distribution of relief across the affected areas, if the organizations themselves are not led with equality in mind.
This concern stems from the region’s history and own battle with racial and economic inequality across various parts of the island.
Puerto Rico’s various regions have experienced different levels of recovery during this period, and local leaders have expressed concerns over the role of inequality in recovery efforts.
