According to recent data published in the journal JAMA, the number of children affected by fetal alcohol syndrome is significantly higher than previously reported.
Fetal alcohol syndrome might affect between 1.1 to 5 percent of children in the United States, researchers found after evaluating more than 3000 children from various communities in the country. That’s approximately five times more than previously estimated.
Among other alcohol-related disorders, fetal alcohol syndrome affects children in learning and development.
During the study, more than one-third of the children’s mothers refused to answer questions regarding alcohol consumption during their pregnancy.
Although data on drinking habits during pregnancy are difficult to gather, experts said “we all could benefit” through accurate data.
