According to a new report, overall life expectancy is increasing for individuals worldwide, but the quality of health continues to decrease in later years.
The study from the Longevity Center found that retired adults are more likely to live many years in poor physical and emotional health.
Researchers compared the life expectancy of adults living in both wealthy and poorer areas and found that while they lived a similar number of years, individuals in less affluent neighborhoods faced more health issues.
“Obviously it is a great social achievement that we have managed to increase life expectancy, but healthy life expectancy is so crucial for ensuring that there is a better quality of life for older adults,” said co-author of the report Dean Hochlaf.
“We need to start having very frank discussions about what social care is going to look like, what healthcare is going to look like…and all of this needs to be set against the context of an ageing society,” he added.
