A program in Oklahoma City is allowing incarcerated pregnant women and mothers to spend time with their children rather than serve time in prison.
ReMerge is available to women facing nonviolent offenses and is also open to mothers who have already lost custody of their children.
All participants must complete therapy, parenting classes, and job training in order to graduate from the program.
Graduates of ReMerge have their charges dropped and are able to reverse intergenerational cycles of incarceration.
Researchers found that separating children from imprisoned mothers not only causes stress but also contributes to the likelihood of their children eventually being incarcerated as well.
