For every dollar invested in education for prisoners, a taxpayer saves five dollars on incarceration costs.
Prisoners are 43 percent less likely to return to prison as well, if they receive an education.
Former prisoner, Johnny Perez, explains how an education made all the difference to ensure that his future would be more promising and one that would include helping others leaving prison to reenter society as contributing, self-sufficient individuals.
The previous administration focused on improving expanding opportunities for prison education, explains Perez, but this time around, Trump’s administration shows “little interest in investing in the lives of the 2.1 million people locked behind our nation’s prisons.”
“All I needed was a chance. There are so many people just like me who are waiting for their chance,” writes Perez.
