Lawmakers Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla) and Sen. Robert Menéndez (D-N.J.) introduced a bill earlier this week to build a museum of the American Latino on the National Mall near other significant cultural and historical museums.
Danny Vargas, Chairman of the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino explains that while the idea has been introduced before and slowed down through Congress, this time the project will gain more momentum because of a report that highlights the “willful neglect” of Hispanics in America. The museum is an effort to celebrate the Latino community as an important part of American history.
“It’s important to talk about the country’s largest ethnic group,” said Vargas.
“Latinos have a long history, and it has not sufficiently penetrated into the psyche of America how vital the contributions of Latinos have been,” Vargas said, as reported by NBC News.
