According to new statistics released in “Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2016,” Americans gave $390 billion in donations, setting a record for the third year in a row.
2016 was marked by a 2.7 percent increase in giving among all major categories of nonprofits.
Religion and education were the two categories that received the most donations by accumulating $183 billion combined.
While individuals, foundations, and corporations increased their donations compared to 2015, the report found charitable gifts from estates decreased significantly from previous years.
“Individual giving continued its remarkable role in American philanthropy in a year that included a turbulent election season that reflected a globally resurgent populism,” explained Dr. Amir Pasic, the Eugene R. Tempel Dean of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
