With the case management program that has helped thousands of asylum seekers to escape harsh conditions in their native countries, now set to close in two weeks, asylum-seekers will likely have to end up in “intensive supervision” programs.
The intensive supervision programs cost less per person – about $7 per person in detention, versus $36 for one family – because they remove resources for those families.
The case management program connects families with legal representation, guidance through the court system, and help to connect them with housing and care.
The program has widely been regarded as a more human alternative to detention centers, where undocumented immigrants are illegally held for months and even years.
Already the Trump administration has allotted $57M of its budget to create more intensive supervision programs as the case management program comes to a close this month.
