Contrary to previous reports that have indicated the opioid epidemic only impacts certain groups of Americans, new studies illustrate the rising number of premature deaths across the country.
According to a recent study, since the start of 2010, death rates for individuals aged 25 to 44 have risen among every racial and ethnic group nationwide.
In particular, the death rate of Native Americans rose 18 percent, a severe increase compared to other racial groups.
The findings highlight the continuously growing number of young Americans who abuse drugs and alcohol.
“What it reflects is an out-of-control epidemic right now,” explained Josh Sharfstein, director of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative at Johns Hopkins.
