In Manhattan, The Shed museum is set to open in 2019, described as “a multi-arts center designed to commission, produce, and present all types of performing arts, visual arts, and popular culture.”
The project is estimated to cost an approximate $500 million, as the same designers that worked on the MoMA are leading the project and in the middle of developing a design that is rather uncertain.
“The opportunity for us to design a ground-up building for the arts forced us to ask the question: ‘What will art look like in 10 years? 20 years? 30 years?’ And the answer was that we simply could not know,” explained one of the architects on the project.
Aside from the actual structure of the museum, the type of programming and art, as well as the cuisine and fashion of the museum is also uncertain or flexible, explains Elizabeth Diller, founding partner of the lead design studio.
