Researchers have begun new studies that would allow blood to be formed from specialized human stem cells.
Cells within a patient will be reconstructed, causing stem cells to eventually become human cells and produce blood within the body.
Rather than relying on donors for transplants, researchers hope this new stem cell method can allow doctors to harvest a patient’s own cells for treatment.
If successful, over 1 million Americans who suffer from blood cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma, can receive improved treatment.
Since the 1950s, scientists have used blood-making stem cells to help patients, but new insights can provide faster and less invasive treatment.
