The Chairwoman of the Federal Reserve, Janet Yellen, said that women are prevented from entering the workforce due to a lack of equal opportunity combined with work and family obligations, and gender discrimination prevents women from receiving fair pay.
On average, women working full time earn approximately 17% less than men, even if they have similar occupations with similar work experience.
Yellen also argued that if the U.S. implemented policies like the ones used in many European countries, the female participation rate within the workforce could be higher than 80%.
