How can we sensitively and adequately address teen suicide?
One show has taken what critics are calling, a “glamorized” approach to the issue, and has more or less ignored mental illness and “the reality of what happens after death.”
13 Reasons Why centers on the suicide of a female high school student and has faced backlash for failing to illuminate the consequences of teen suicuide for families, communities, and the public’s overall understanding of the issue and how to properly support teenagers.

Supporters of the show point to its depictions of rape and violent masculinity as ways to spread awareness of issues that are often overlooked amongst teenagers.
USA Today outlines some of the major realities around sexual violence that are addressed in the series in its article.
