In California, a group of nonprofits received $1.3M in donations from foundations looking to advance the mission of the Positive Youth Justice Initiative (PYJI).
The initiative is an effort to eliminate racial disparities and to transform California’s juvenile justice system to help populations of youth in need of care and resources.
Eleven California nonprofits were selected and awarded the funds to help “strengthen connections and build collaboration…identify policy opportunities for advocacy and organizing.”
The prison “realignment” effort five years ago led to significant changes in the criminal justice system, including pushing the burden of low-level offenders onto counties and away from state prison systems.
The PYJ Initiative is an opportunity for counties to improve the criminal justice system at county level by promoting restorative justice and to help connect more youth within the system with resources to survive trauma, neglect and instability.
