South Dakota – a politically red state that voted for Trump in the 2016 election – is also a major recipient of funds for arts.
In 2009, the state faced threats to its arts council when the Republican-controlled state government considered vanishing the council.
Several rural states like South Dakota depend on funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and generally also benefit more than states with other sources for funding. Last year, South Dakota’s arts council received $966,600 from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The existence of many arts and culture programs rely on funds from the National Endowment from the Arts, including Black Hills Symphony Orchestra, Rolling Arts at Pine Ridge, Dahl Arts Center, and the Termesphere Gallery, among others.
