Donald Trump’s election came to the surprise of many across the nation, inspiring social movements from hundreds of activists across the country.
Major literary scholars are no exception, and made up a large percentage of social activists leading movements against new policies, including poet Erin Belieu, who started the initiative Writers Resist.
Writers Resist promotes grassroots literary action in support of “the most basic principles of freedom and justice for all.”
Several writers have spoken out against the new administration, and have called for unity in standing up for American values. PEN America, an organization that promotes human rights through literature and free expression, has helped launched this initiative with its core mission to preserve and promote social good.
The kickoff for Writers Resist in January gave many writers the opportunity to read their work publicly and express their national pride.
