The new administration presented plans for the federal budget this week, which included removing funds completely for public broadcasting.
The administration argued that the budget cuts reflect the government’s plan to better define its financial obligation to Americans and to reflect “fiscal responsibility.”
Organizations that rely heavily on federal funds to make their content available to the public, such as NPR and PBS, are ready to take a stand against the proposed budget cuts, in defense of preserving a diverse system of public media. Executives of the organizations argue that diverse public programming is especially essential for low-income families and children to have access to educational programming.
The administration argued that such programming should be funded by free market, not taxpayers.
The total loss for the main distributor of funds for public broadcasting, CPB, will be about $450M.
The cost per American taxpayer, per year, is a mere $1.35.
