During the recession, many states began to cut funding to higher education, but that trend has started to reverse. According to Quartz, “On average, state spending on higher education increased a respectable 4.1% between the 2015 and 2016 fiscal years.”
Despite this good news, a Grapevine Report from the Illinois State University and the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association also found that certain states have decreased spending on higher education by as much as 27 percent.
The wide differences between state budget increases and decreases is stark. From 2011 to 2016, on the positive side, North Dakota and Massachusetts added 43 and 23 percent more to their budgets, respectively, and on the negative, Arizona and Louisiana shrank their budgets by 27 and 25 percent, respectively.
The overall trend toward an increase in state education spending is an optimistic one, but must be further analyzed on a case by case basis.
