One of the arts groups working to revive the late City Opera of NYC is adding an approach never taken before: putting on a production of the opera “Tosca,” the first show performed by the City Opera in 1944. The arts group in question, NYCO Renaissance, is currently battling another organization for revival rights, but will go through with the production regardless of the legal results.
The City Opera went bankrupt in 2013, selling its assets, ending operations, and leaving a void in the city’s opera culture. Leaders at NYCO Renaissance hope that their efforts will fill this gap by staging repertoire that ranks between small local productions and large scale professional works at the Metropolitan Opera.
