Environmental Nonprofit Sends CA Lawmakers to Australia for Drought Lessons

This past Monday, October 19, California lawmakers as well as business, labor, and environmental leaders embarked on a visit to Australia, funded and organized by the California Foundation on the Environment and Economy, reports the Associated Press. During the nine-day trip, the distinguished group, which includes California Assembly Minority Leader Kristin Olsen and Democratic Senate Pro Tem Kevin de León, are studying how Australia managed its longest and most severe drought, which lasted from 1997 to 2009. Extreme weather events have increased due to climate change, rending California’s capacity to adapt to variable environmental conditions more important than ever.
