New York City’s Heart Gallery, dedicated to raising awareness of foster children, has started a program with the Department of Homeless Services that pairs notable photographers with selected homeless individuals. The program, “Through the Eyes of the Homeless,” united Deborah Feingold, portraitist of rock stars and world leaders, with 54-year-old Janet Sandlin. Sandlin and Feingold’s fruitful partnership demonstrates the empowering nature of creative photography– the once homeless Sandlin just moved into permanent housing. Her images and others from the initiative will be displayed at the gallery on Nov. 16.
