According to a new report from the Institute for Higher Education Policy, of all the nation’s best public universities, only four are affordable to low-income students. This creates problems for students from disadvantaged backgrounds because they have fewer opportunities to obtain upward economic mobility.
Because public universities are funded by taxpayer dollars, it only makes sense that the public, including low-income students who perform well, should have access to this resource to be educated.
NPR reports that a number of factors have made these universities unaffordable for students, including increased tuition over the years and a lack of scholarships and grants to keep up with those rising costs.
