California has slowly but surely been the victim of eroding coastlines and will over the next decades suffer as coastal cities and regions undergo destruction from rising sea levels.
Scientists estimate that by the end of the century, sea level rise will be greater than 9 feet.
While some cities are taking measures into their own hands and planning to battle sea level rise through reconstruction, such as Balboa Island, which is “barely above sea level” and planning to invest $1.8 million in a wall that separates it from the ocean, others aren’t able to do much.
By 2100, LA Times reports, the coastlines of California could be completely different, with more than $150 billion in property at risk of flooding. The state runs a huge risk of one day no longer having sandy beaches if leaders turn to building walls against rising sea levels.
