According to new data, tourism around the world accounts for 8 percent of the globe’s total greenhouse gas emissions through various activity associated with it, such as flights, hotel pollution, food production and more.
The study published in the journal Nature reports that the global carbon footprint of tourism-related activities increased from 3.9 to 4.5 gigatons, and researchers found that the rate of pollution is growing in that area more than in construction or manufacturing, as reported by US News.
Some of the countries identified with the great emissions in tourism include the U.S., China, Germany and India. Furthermore, smaller countries can have up to 80 percent of pollution as a direct result of tourism, but face difficult challenges because they rely on tourism to survive.
