According to a new study published in the Nature Climate Change journal, climate change levels have risen over the past decade, contradicting previously published reports.
During the period of 1998-2012, scientists thought decreasing surface temperatures were part of a “global warming hiatus.”
However, due to missing data collected from the Arctic Ocean, the temperature within the area has actually increased more than five times the global average.
“It’s a necessary part of the equation and the answer effects us all,” said Xiangdong Zhang, an atmospheric scientist with the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ International Arctic Research Center, on the recent findings.
As a result of the differences in the Arctic’s temperature, environmentalists are examining more diverse ways in ending the fight against climate change.
