Although Republicans in New York have been relatively resistant to Governor Cuomo’s education plan for prisoners, the program will carry forward with the support of $7 million, granted by Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus Vance Jr.
Vance argued that it made no sense to leave prisoners without a proper chance to succeed.
Studies have shown that prisoners who participate in education programs while they serve their time are less likely to reoffend and end up back in prison upon release. Studies also indicate that for every dollar invested in education for inmates, there is a $4 return down the line.
Cuomo’s program will expand education programs to reach 3500 inmates, covering topics of math, science, philosophy, social sciences and art.
