The San Francisco-based nonprofit Project Open Hand has been providing free food delivery services to thousands of sick patients in California, helping those who are battling HIV, chronic illnesses, diabetes, kidney failures and even delivering to persons with disabilities.
California recently awarded the organization, and five others, $6M from the state budget for 2017-2018 for a pilot program to help the state’s low-income patients across San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland.
The program will essentially allow the nonprofits to identify patients in need and deliver healthy meals to those who are hospitalized, and also arranging for meal deliveries to their homes.
The hospitals where the food services will be available have not yet been determined.
