Small, private nonprofit colleges across the United States as well as public universities have experienced dramatic drops in enrollment, and now they are finding new ways to reel in applicants, and to improve retention rates.
In addition to increasing outreach and recruiting efforts, universities are also working to expand opportunities and programs within their schools to reach a wider spectrum of students, in hopes of improving enrollment.
Internship opportunities and study-abroad programs are growing too, alongside initiatives to reduce costs of attending for students.
Several factors have contributed to the decrease in enrollment over the last five years, which dropped by more than 2.4 million. Among those factors are rising costs in tuition and student debt.
