A new initiative is allowing students to borrow laptops from their schools in order to retain information they learned during the school year.
The new program is designed to help low-income students who do not have access to resources that are provided throughout the school year.
“It has opened up a huge educational resource to our kids who may not have access otherwise,” said Kelli Hoffman, principal at French Middle School who uses the laptop program.
While some find fault with the program, claiming the laptops will most likely be used for entertainment rather than educational purposes, many are praising the initiative for the support it provides for students.
“I think we tend to have this idyllic view of what childhood summers are, but the reality is that for kids living in poverty, summer can be a time of isolation and hunger,” explained Matthew Boulay, interim CEO of the National Summer Learning Association.
