This weekend, the Polynesian canoe Hokule’a has returned to Hawaii after three years of sailing around the globe, “using only stars, wind and ocean swells as guides,” reported BBC.
One of the objectives of the voyage was to raise awareness about ocean conservation and sustainability, as well as the importance of protecting indigenous traditions and cultures, for which the voyage was appropriately named “Malama Honua” (to care for our Island Earth).
“The voyage has celebrated a resurgence of pride and respect for our native cultures and has created opportunities for people throughout the world to honor our shared heritage,” the voyagers wrote on their website.
At least 200 volunteer crew members sailed the vessel throughout its three-year journey that landed on 150 ports and 18 nations.
