A new study conducted by NASA researchers found that aquifers in Greenland are channeling the country’s melting ice sheets back into the ocean.
Kristin Poinar, a postdoctoral fellow with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, explains that the discovery of ice sheet movement patterns “might be the significant contribution of how the aquifers affect global sea level.”
“Her model shows that water is getting to the bed, and that adds a whole different level of significance to how that storage of water might affect changes in sea level rise in the future,” said Rick Forster, a glaciologist, as reported by the online journal, Scientific American.
Scientists studying climate change now have access to more accurate models for predicting the melting rates of ice sheets.
