Hate crimes motivated by hate toward a particular religion or related to race showed a 6 percent increase in 2015.

According to FBI data, there were at least 5,850 hate crime incidents, more than half of them targeting people who are African American. Religious hate crime increased by 23 percent, compared to the previous year. However, based on national surveys, 60 percent of all hate crimes go unreported.

Attacks on the LGBT community went up and so did attacks on Muslim-Americans, by 67 percent.

“The annual hate crimes report always comes out toward the end of the year. This year, it happened to be released as the country was already discussing the frequency of hate crimes — based on alleged acts of violence and intimidation in the wake of the presidential election,” wrote NPR.
