On May 14, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will open its doors after a three-year rebuilding project to vastly expand its space and increase the number of works on display. “The opening shows will feature more than 600 new and promised gifts, in addition to hundreds of old favorites,” reports SF Gate.
The celebrations will also draw attention to a few upcoming major temporary exhibitions, including a show from New York’s Museum of Modern Art in October and an exhibit co-organized with the Baltimore Museum of Art set to run in Spring 2017.
According to Director Neal Benezra, the museum’s specific focus on collections during its reopening highlights the museum’s unique history and place within the Bay Area community. He also expressed hopes that the reopening will help dispel popular notions of contemporary art as “difficult” and “elitist.”
