Side by Side, a faith-based nonprofit located in Laurel, MD, runs programs in Laurel public schools for parents to learn how to help their kids learn. The initiative, called the “Great Start” program, has been helping many low-income and ESL parents get involved in their kids’ education since its launch in 2012.
“Parental involvement is widely accepted by education experts as an essential ingredient for student success,” writes the Baltimore Sun. Unfortunately, in the Laurel school district, language and cultural barriers often get in the way of parental involvement in education. Side by Side’s Great Start program, complete with interpreters and free child care, helps them to overcome these obstacles.
