The Houston nonprofit “Dream It. Do It. Southeast Texas,” has started running programs to introduce middle and high school students to jobs in skilled labor, reports the Houston Chronicle. The program is a collaborative initiative of Neighborhood Centers, a job development nonprofit for low-income families, and the Economic Alliance Houston Port Program, a regional economic development corporation.
Dream It. Do It. alleviates poverty and helps industry: it connects low-income individuals to well-paying jobs and has the potential to stem the skilled laborer shortage in Houston’s Bay Area. Despite being the region’s most important industry for economic development, industrial labor is seen as lowly work– a view that Dream It. Do It. works to change.
