Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan plan to launch a school linked to health services, which will serve 700 disadvantaged families in East Palo Alto and Menlo Park. Based on experiences as a pediatrician and inner city educator, Chan asserts there is a connection between children’s physical well being and educational improvement, one that can be negatively affected by poverty. At the new school, Chan hopes to improve early education outcomes for disadvantaged students by emphasizing a holistic understanding of health. This initiative is the latest in the couple’s philanthropic endeavors in education, following a $100 million donation to New Jersey schools and a $120 million pledge to aid disadvantaged Bay Area schools.
