The Key to Saving Kids’ Lives in the Developing World: Soap

The United Nations children’s agency (UNICEF) recently announced that the persistent failure of people to hand-wash with soap remains an obstacle to global development, particularly in light of the fact that over 800 children die from diseases preventable by clean water-access and improved hygiene. The announcement comes in the wake of the launch of the United Nations 17 sustainable development goals, from which number 6 aims for clean water and sanitation. Although access to clean water still foregrounds hygiene as the goal, simply equipping kids with soap will prevent the spread of pathogens that needlessly claim lives everyday.
