This past Tuesday, former first lady Laura Bush announced a multi-agency conservation effort to rebuild and sustain Texas’ monarch butterfly population. Her organization, Texan by Nature, as well as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the National Wildlife Federation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others will be driving the initiative. In the state of Texas, monarch butterflies are important agricultural pollinators, and their populations have dropped significantly due to habitat loss. As its first concrete goal, the effort aims to have the monarch population at 225 million by 2020.
