According to Forbes contributor Maria Klawe, minority representation in STEM education courses and professional fields has made modest advances, but still runs against many obstacles to its proliferation. Unfortunately, public K-12 schools that serve minority populations often don’t have the resources to invest in quality STEM education. However, Klawe points out, people like Professor Talithia Williams, an African American professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd, are working towards getting minority youth, particularly girls, interested in STEM by working with nonprofits that promote math and science education among minority students.
