Over the years, cases of children being removed from their families have increased, with instances of doctors mistakenly believing children are abused by their parents when certain medical conditions appear.
In these cases, parents have faced a lot of hardship in the loss, separation and legal fights that followed.
An NBC News and Houston Chronicle investigation found evidence that an increasing number of families had lost custody of their children based on one or a few mistaken doctors’ reports that said they had abused their children.
Lawmakers are now looking for ways to improve the system and doctors and experts who determine when a child is in danger in their parents’ custody.
Some experts have suggested the request of a second medical opinion before a child is removed from his or her family.
