Though across the U.S. gun violence seems to be more prominent, in the Bay Area it has dropped by 30 percent, according to investigations by The Guardian, and this is largely a result of community-led efforts to reduce the violence.
Deadly shootings in the region have dropped by 30 percent in the last decade, despite growing inequality and economic pressures.
The data analyzed by The Guardian revealed several important findings, including that black residents are still being impacted the most by remaining gun violence; gun homicide rates decreased the most among black residents of the Bay Area; the decrease in violence happened as cities invested millions of dollars into their communities through public health initiatives to reduce gun violence; and gun violence dropped in areas where gentrification is happening the most, but the areas in which people moved to when displaced did not increase in violence.
