According to a new report, teens between the ages of 12 and 14 who identify as LGBT are more likely to commit suicide than their heterosexual counterparts.
The study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that during the years of 2013 to 2015, 24 percent of youths in that age group of suicides were by LGBT youth. Though the study found that this same trend among LGBT persists at an older age, it was more pronounced among younger LGBT. Researchers point to their inability to have resources and control of situations at a younger age as one of the main culprits that leads this age group to higher suicide rates.
The report took into account data from more than 10,000 cases of suicide among youth, and more than 2,000 who identified as LGBT.
In the study researchers found LGBT women were more likely to commit suicide, and transgender males were more likely than anyone else (four times as likely) to commit suicide.
