A new study found that children born to pregnant mothers who develop diabetes during pregnancy are more likely to battle with being overweight later on in life.
According to the report, these children have triple the odds of becoming overweight throughout life.
“Just like smoking, alcohol consumption and other lifestyle choices, [women’s] weight prior to getting pregnant, and weight gain and blood sugar control during pregnancy may have a significant impact on the future health of their children,” said researchers Dr. Padma Kaul of the University of Alberta, as reported by US News.
More than 80,000 children were examined for the study, and the results were that the obesity rate among children born to mothers with diabetes was around 43 percent, compared to 21 percent for children born to mothers without diabetes. The study also found that children born relatively large were more likely to be overweight later on in life.
