Trying to escape a Thanksgiving alone, Scott Macaulay, a vacuum cleaner repairman, began his 33 year long tradition of serving a Thanksgiving meal to others just like him.
In 1985, Macaulay put out an ad in the Melrose Free Press inviting twelve strangers to join him for his Thanksgiving meal.
Ever since, anyone who makes a reservation is welcome to come celebrate in the basement of Melrose’s Green Street Baptist Church.
Macaulay not only shops for and prepares the feast, he also decorates the basement to resemble a comfortable living space.
He claims the gathering is more than just eating a meal; it’s about making memories and bringing the people of Melrose together.
Year after year, strangers from the community eat, socialize, and leave Macaulay a slip of paper noting what they’re thankful for, which he reads throughout the year.
