A new report highlights some of the challenges faced by arts and culture organizations across the U.S.
Commissioned by the Akonadi Foundation and the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, the report discusses an increasing amount of evidence indicating inequity in funding for the arts. According to the report, 60 percent of funding for arts organizations ends up supporting only 2 percent of national cultural institutions, and furthermore only four percent of funding supports organizations dedicated to supporting people of color.
The study also specifically examined smaller arts organizations in Oakland, California, which are lacking adequate resources to continue their work. Many of these organizations have fallen off the grid and lost their competitive edge in winning grants.
Many of these organizations serve historically black communities in Oakland, and many of them are losing funding, the report notes, because of their proximity to San Francisco.
