Washington, D.C. is being sued for gentrification that is affecting low-income, black families through policies that “favor white millennial renters,” as reported by The Root.
The lawsuit, filed by a Washington civil rights lawyer who is representing the community group CARE, claims that the city is displacing black families from their neighborhoods through policies that are design to attract homebuyers from STEM professions — often high income, and often white.
Today less than 50 percent of those living in D.C. are black, compared to more than 70 percent African American population that made up residents in the area back in 1970.
