The Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, the U.S.’s first memorial dedicated to victims of racial terror, will be opening up in Alabama in late April.
The museum features pieces that memorialize all of the lives that were lost due to racism and injustice throughout America’s history, including lives lost to lynching.
“The history of lynching needs to be memorialized in a powerful way and in a place where people can deal with it, where people can integrate it into their vision of history,” said Kirk Savage, professor of architecture and art history at the University of Pittsburgh, as reported by The Art Newspaper.
After raising $20 million in funding over the last couple of years, the museum will open up with with performances from both artists and activists.
