In light of the national drug crisis, researchers found that over the counter medications, such as Tylenol and ibuprofen, are as effective as opioids in treating pain.
The study, conducted by JAMA, is the first randomized clinical trial comparing opioids to other pain medications.
Participants who took non opioid painkillers reported fewer instances of pain intensity compared to those prescribed with Vicodin, morphine, or oxycodone.
“Overall, opioids did not demonstrate any advantage over non opioid medications that could potentially outweigh their greater risk of harms,” said the Dr. Erin Krebs, the lead researcher of the study.
On average, 115 Americans overdose daily due to opioid addiction.
