A national survey from the American Alliance of Museums conducted in 2017 found that 84 percent of top leadership positions in the U.S. museums are held by white leadership.
These facts are particularly important when considering the level of influence that curators, educators and boards have over the art that is exhibited and shared with the public.
Additionally, the survey found that at least 80 percent of students in the museum studies field are also white.
Visitation to American museums is declining, as reported by the Chicago Tribune, and despite efforts to improve diversity in leadership and in visitation, the number of diverse audiences visiting American museums today is still drastically low.
